a series of courses for Medical First Aid Training in the Maritime Sector.

ELEMENTARY
FIRST AID
The objective
of the training is to give all persons intending to go to sea, a basic
knowledge of the immediate action to be taken upon encountering an accident
or other medical emergency aboard ship.
There
are no specific entry requirements, other than those required for entry
to the industry.
MEDICAL
FIRST AID ABOARD SHIP
This
course is for the seafarer who is destined to deal with Medical First
Aid aboard ship complying with the MCA & Merchant Navy Training Board
Syllabus. INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNISED (International Maritime Organisations)
SOLAS agreement STCW 95.
On completion
of the training, the trainees will have knowledge of:
- the general
construction and function of various parts of the human body
- medical stores
carried in ships
- general principles
relating to pharmacology
- principles
for dealing with accidents or other medical emergencies using available
equipment and medical guides.
The
trainee will also be able to apply immediate first aid in the event of
an accident or illness on board. These objectives are reflected in the
occupational standards contained in Unit M7 of the Merchant Vessel S/NVQs.
Entry
requirements: Trainees must be at least 16 years of age, and have received
approved or recognised training in Elementary First Aid (in accordance
with Section A-VI/1-3 of the STCW Code).
MEDICAL
CARE ON BOARD SHIP
Training
for medical care on board ship On completion of the training, the trainees
will have sufficient knowledge of the types of ships' medical equipment
and stores and their use to be able to:
- diagnose medical
problems on board ship
- provide medical
care to the sick and injured while they remain on board.
- participate in
co-ordinated schemes for medical assistance to ships.
These objectives are
reflected in the occupational standards contained in Unit M10 of the Merchant
Vessel S/NVQs.
Entry requirements:
Trainees must be at least 21 years of age, and have received approved
or recognised training in Medical First Aid (in accordance with Section
A-VI/4-1 of the STCW Code).
